Goal & Core Rules

Deliver checkmate by placing the opponent’s king under attack with no legal escape.

  • Players alternate turns moving one piece at a time according to its movement rules.
  • You may not make a move that leaves your king in check.
  • Captures occur by moving onto an occupied square; there is no luck element.
  • Special rules include castling, en passant, and pawn promotion.

  • Develop pieces early: knights and bishops before launching attacks.
  • Protect your king—castling is usually a good idea.
  • Don’t hang pieces: check every move for simple captures.

Advanced Tips

  • Evaluate trades by counting attackers/defenders and considering king safety.
  • Convert advantages: simplify when ahead and activate your king in endgames.
  • Study common mating patterns and tactical motifs (pins, forks, skewers).

Origins & History

The origin of chess is debated, but credible evidence places early forms around the 6th century CE in India (often linked to chaturanga), from which the game spread widely.
